The holiday season is truly one of the best times of the year at the Point Pleasant Borough School District! It marks a time of giving, winter concerts and special traditions, and an immense feeling of joy can certainly be felt throughout the halls of each school.
As we enter 2020, I reflect back on the first months of the school year. In such a short time, we’ve seen an overwhelming amount of achievements from students. Whether in academics, athletics or the arts, our students are excelling in every area!
So far this year, we praised 20 AP Scholars, 12 Asbury Park Press Student Voices Essay and Video Contest winners and 8 Girl Scouts from Ocean Road School who created a public service announcement to spread diabetes awareness.
We cheered on our Fall Sports teams, including our first-ever surf team, and watched student-athletes Jordan Carr, Molly Kate Sabia and Nicholas Guzzi sign their National Letters of Intent to continue their academic and athletic careers at Division I schools.
We saw the Point Pleasant Borough High School Competition Marching Band and Color Guard take home the first place title at the Tournament of Bands State Competition and Atlantic Coast Championship, and shared our excitement with Sunny Ball for being selected for the 2019 NJ All-State Orchestra on French horn as well as Luke Baker, Sean Haugh, Amy Scraggs and Jane Rusher for being selected for the 2020 All Shore Chorus.
We applauded our talented students after watching the fall play, Shakespeare in Love, and winter chorus and band performances, including two special performances from our elementary choirs: Nellie F. Bennett’s “Sounds of the Season” debut on News 12 New Jersey and Ocean Road School’s chorus assembly for Brandywine Living residents.
District teachers are receiving well-deserved recognition for their efforts, including high school math and robotics teacher Gerard Marrone, who was named a 2019 New Jersey Exemplary Secondary Educator, as well as David Fisher and David Johnson, who were the 2018-2019 recipients of the W!SE Gold Star Teacher Award.
Additionally, our schools have earned tremendous accolades: Point Pleasant Borough High School was named a W!SE Blue Star School for the 2018-2019 academic year and Nellie F. Bennett, Ocean Road School and Memorial Middle School each received Gold Level Recognition from New Jersey Safe Routes to School for 2019.
For the 2019-2020 school year, we also implemented a number of major changes throughout the district, including the rotate-and-drop schedule for high school students, flexible seating in more than ten middle school classrooms, hands-on science kits from Carolina’s Building Blocks of Science Program for elementary students, and the incorporation of more social-emotional activities and strategies in every classroom to improve student wellness.
As you can see, the 2019-2020 school year is off to an incredible start! I cannot wait to see what the rest of the year holds for our schools and our students.
On behalf of Central Administration, our schools and the Board of Education, I offer our best wishes for a safe, happy and healthy New Year!
